It's been some time since I blogged...I hope I still remember all the stories!! (I re-read the previous posts and I have to admit I'd forgotten some of them.)
This happened before MM was 3 years old...
Once, we were going out to the supermarket. I was cajoling MM to wear a brown shorts that his yaya had left on the bed for him.
Me: Brown is nice! Like, the tree trunk is brown--
MM: I'm not a tree!
LOL
So, we went to get some shorts that is not brown.

Once, J (his mom) was preparing him for sleep...
MM: Mommy, is my stomach small or big?
J (trying for diplomacy): Medium.
MM: Let's go make it big.
Meaning, he wants to have pre-sleep snacks! Cookies and milk! Yum!
* * *
And before his 3rd birthday, in October 2012, the whole family went to Australia (Tasmania and Sydney) and we had fun videos of MM that sadly, I won't be able to post here.
Due to the trip, MM was quite close to Grandma PL for a time, even to the point of wanting to forego his nap (on the ride to Blue Mountain) so he could sit with Grandma and hear her spin stories!
My Hair Grow Big
Tuesday, October 9, 2012
I just came home from visiting MM and doing other stuff with his parents.
I cut my hair today, so I asked MM, "Look what's different with Ah-ko today?"
MM: What's wrong with you?
Me: I cut my hair.
MM: I also cut my hair.
Me: When?
MM (thinking hard): Last time. My hair is small. I grow big. My hair grow big!
* * *
Me: Where are you now?
MM: In Singapore.
Me (holding his leg): Am I right here with you?
MM: Yes.
Me: Where am I?
MM: Ah-ko (referring to me) is in Philippines.
Huh???
* * *
G was teasing MM.
G: MM, give me your hand. I'm going to staple it.
MM (holding his hand close to his body and leaning away from G): No.
G: Why not?
MM: It's painful.

Late September, we were at a store in Orchard, buying a car seat for MM. J (MM's mom) saw this fairy tale book that she wants to read to MM in the same shop.
J: MM, come sit down and listen to Mommy tell you a story.
MM (who doesn't want to sit and listen to story alone): Ah-ko, do you want to sit and listen to story?
I was looking at other things beside the bookshelf at the time.
Me: No. You sit and listen.
MM: Ah-ko, do you want to sit and listen to story?
Me: You sit and listen.
MM: Ah-ko, you want to sit and listen.
Me (light bulb!): Okay. Let's sit here and listen.
**Actually, he wants me to sit and listen with him, but he's going the diplomatic way by asking you first, hoping you get the hint. If you don't, then he tells you outright.
Another instance on night of Sept 29:
MM: Ah-ko, where's your iPhone?
Me (get iPhone from bag): What do you want to see in my iPhone?
MM: Do you want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? (then click on YouTube app!)
Me: Oh, you want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse?
YouTube loads, showing Little Einstein which which we must've watched before.
MM: Ah-ko, do you want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Little Einstein?
Me: How about you? Do you want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Little Einstein?
MM: Do you want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse?
That's the hint!!
Me: Okay, let's watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse!

Is It...Rubber Duckie?
Thursday, September 20, 2012
Timeline: It's 2 months to MM's 3rd birthday!
* * *
Last night, I was reading a book about ducks to MM.
Me: Here's Papa Duck, Mama Duck and their 5 babies. What are baby ducks called?
MM (thinking): Um...rubber duckie?
* * *
A few weeks ago, G told this story:
MM has this favorite chair in school. One day, his friend E was sitting on his chair.
MM wanted E out of his chair, so he walked up to him and said, "Follow Mommy". (referring to E's Mom who was walking away)
LOL
Smart kid! I like his style. He didn't outright say "Get out of my chair", which would've incited a fight (maybe) and hurt feelings. This way, he was subtle about getting his way.
Dare I say, "cunning"?

Timeline: MM was not yet 2-1/2 years old at this time.
I was showing MM a small wound on my hand.
He asked, "You see doctor?"
How did he know to see doctor for wounds and stuff?
Yeah, that he knows is probably ordinary, but I can't help but be in awe.
* * *
It was the day after we showed MM our friend J's son, B. J and her family lived in Canada, so we chatted through Facetime via the iPhone for a short while, as I was running out of battery.
I was sort of testing his memory, so I asked, "Do you remember B?"
MM nodded. "Is baby."
(Funny moment: B and MM are about the same age, but according to MM, B is baby while he is not a baby anymore. Cute!)
Me: Where did you see B?
MM: Ah-ko's (aunt) tel-e-phone.
* * *
Timeline: MM is 2-1/2 years old now.
Late May, MM was sick. I took leave from office one day to play with him, as he couldn't go to school. We had fun, playing choo-choo train and going to the bank, airport, police station, and especially McDonald's. When I told MM that the train was stopping at McDonald's and asked who's going down, he raised his hand and said with a shy smile, "Me."
Then, around six plus, his Ah-pe (H) came. The moment MM saw him, he had this big, big smile on his face, and as he was sitting down, he thrashed his legs happily. (If he'd been standing, he'd have done his happy dance.)
Wow. I spent one whole day with him, and Ah-pe is still his favorite person.
* * *
One night, some friends and I were at their place. After dinner, C, K and I were in MM's room with MM. Suddenly, MM was pushing at K, saying, "Go out."
According to C, MM even said, "Go out...stand in the corner."
K was playing it up, saying, "Can I stay inside? I want to say inside."
MM said, "You want to go outside."
Here's how I interpret it: Originally, MM wants K to go outside ("Go out"). In the end, MM's affirming that it's K who wants to go outside ("You want to go outside.") MM probably didn't realize what he did/said, but it's funny from the adult perspective.
* * *
His Grandma A came to visit, and she was telling us how "guwai" (good) MM is.
Apparently, they were at Toys R'Us. MM as usual went for a ball. But he has lots of balls, and they try to reason with him on this. Then apparently, MM told his grandma that he'll only play with the ball at the store, and when they're at the counter, he'll return it.
And true enough, he did.
* * *
MM is now back in the Philippines for 3 weeks. According to his dad, he wants to go to school, so they let him attend one.
On the first day, a (bad) classmate spanked him. MM cried.
On the second day, the parents weren't allowed to be in the classroom anymore. The (bad) classmate cried. MM approached him and said, "Don't cry."
That's compassion from the little boy who got spanked by the same boy. Is this what is called "turning the other cheek"? I think it's even better. "Turning the other cheek" is passive. You just let who slapped you once, slap you again. What MM did was to offer comfort to the boy who did him wrong.
And we know MM couldn't have forgotten the "trauma" of being hit, as evidenced by his remembering B in one of the anecdotes above.
I think we can learn a lot from MM in this regard. I hope he grows up into the fine young man he is showing himself to be at this very young age.

The Floor is Dirty
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
At this point, MM is just 2-1/2 years old (at request of grandparents, I must put the age)
Once, I was playing with MM after dinner. I was drawing in his erasable board. I wasn't good with drawing, but I managed a reasonable sun with some trees, and I worked so hard on it, so when MM erased it, I pretended to cry.
MM erased it so he could draw, I guess, but when he saw me cry, he handed it back to me and tell me to draw again. (So sweet.)
We played ball for awhile, then, he picked up the erasable board again.
He looked at me and asked, "I can erase?"
I said, "Yes."
He turned to erase, then looked at me, and said, "You cannot cry, Ah-ko (Aunt)."
I assured him I won't.
He repeated his statement, before erasing my drawing.
So cute!
* * *
He was singing, "Apple and banana...", which later became, "Apple and banani..."
I asked, "What's banani?"
He said, "A kind of banana."
* * *
We were at the supermarket, and we're letting him choose what to buy. So far, he picked some apples and his favorite Ritz cookies. When it came to chocolate, he didn't know what to pick. He kept looking at the shelves of chocolate, when finally, he pushed at my hand and said, "Ah-ko, you pick."
I picked up the chocolate I've been wanting to buy, Dove brand chocolate with Hazelnut & Raisins. I told him this, and he asked, "What's raisin?"
I said, "Dried grapes."
I knew he wouldn't like it (he doesn't like grapes yet) and true enough, he told me to pick another. I saw a Richter chocolate with cornflakes. I read to him the line at the bottom, "With crispy-crunchy cornflakes."
He said, "I like it." (He likes all things crunchy.)
He got the chocolate from me and put it in the cart.
* * *
Once, MM was at our house watching TV. He kept taking off his shoes to walk on the floor, so finally, I told him, "The floor is dirty."
Around 930pm, he had to go home to sleep. But he wouldn't budge from where he was sitting on the sofa with his shoes on. He touched his shoes and said, "My shoes."
I said, checking him over, "What's wrong with your shoes?" I thought maybe the catch had come off or something, but no. Everything was fine.
I lifted him down to the floor, but he stood on his heels.
I asked him, "MM, what's wrong?"
He said, "The floor is dirty."
LOL

I cannot ride a taxi here
Sunday, April 22, 2012
My parents were here on a visit recently.
MM wanted to play with a plastic cup. So I got Grandpa C's cup and gave it to him, saying, "Here, Grandpa let you borrow his cup."
Later on, we were standing in front of a trash can.
MM (pointing at it): This is a trash can.
Me: Do you want to throw the cup?
MM: No, this is Grandpa. (meaning Grandpa's cup)
* * *
MM is starting to learn how to connect pieces of information.
His grandma A is here on a visit. Once, when they were going out, they went to the carpark to get the car.
MM (telling his grandma): This is a carpark.
MM (shaking his head): I cannot ride a taxi here.
Grandma A: Why?
MM: There is no red taxi. There is no blue taxi. There is no white taxi....
* * *
This next anecdote is related by MM's dad, G.
One time, they were at an indoor playground where there is a miniature house, which has a front and back door. MM wants to go in through the front door, but a boy was there, who wouldn't open the door.
G: Go on through the back.
MM obeyed. When he was inside the house, he said to the boy, "Get out of my home. Get out."
For a non-confrontational barely 2-1/2 year old boy, that came as a surprise to me.

I can walk!
Monday, April 2, 2012
J was carrying MM, and she said, "Aunt C help Mommy carry you. Okay?"
MM: No.
J: How about I give you biscuit?
MM (nodding): Okay.
So, I was carrying him while J fished out the bottle of crackers from her bag. MM was greedy and trying to get more than one. He got two.
Once he had them in his greedy little fists, he told me, "I can walk."
Meaning, I should put him down now! Smart kid.
* * *
MM was over at our place watching TV, then it was time to go out. I pointed at Papa, who was in his house clothes, and asked in Hokkien, "Angkong tio wa sa ni?" (Should grandpa change clothes?)
MM nodded.
I pointed at him. "MM tio wa sa ni?"
MM shook his head. "I wa sa diao lo." (I have already changed my clothes.)
* * *
MM was looking at the videos and pictures in my iphone. When Mom (MM's grandma) shifted her chair near him, he moved the iphone over so Ama (grandma) could watch the videos together with him!
* * *
G, MM's dad, had to drink vitamin C, which was dissolved in water. So, MM got the spoon and fed his dad, saying, "Ah..."
After he fed G 4 times, he said, "Very good, Daddy!"
MM: No.
J: How about I give you biscuit?
